Baytex Energy (TSX: BTE) is weighing a sale of its US Eagle Ford operations for as much as $3 billion, a move that would reshape a portfolio where the basin currently drives the majority of 2025 production and more than half of planned spending.
Baytex is working with advisers to gauge buyer interest for the package, with no final decision made and the option to retain the assets still on the table, per the reports.

The contemplated sale would mark a sharp turn from 2023’s Ranger Oil acquisition, which Baytex promoted as doubling free cash flow and adding “at least a dozen years” of oil-weighted drilling. Today, the Eagle Ford is described in an October investor presentation as the majority of Baytex production, with 82,000 b/d in 2025 and accounting for 57% of an estimated $1.2 billion exploration and development program.
Operationally, the Eagle Ford is characterized as more price-sensitive than the Permian because of a shallower, mature reservoir and steeper decline rates, requiring ongoing drilling to hold volumes. With oil hovering in the lower-to-mid US$60 range, operators have focused on inventory optimization.
Peers have already moved like Ovintiv who last year sold Uinta assets while increasing exposure to the Montney in Canada.
If executed near the $3-billion mark, the transaction would be portfolio-defining, given the Eagle Ford’s current share of Baytex’s production and capex. Proceeds could address leverage estimated at US$1.6 billion debt and reweight investment toward Western Canada.
Baytex Energy last traded at $3.59 on the TSX.
