BC Liberal Party Rebrands Itself as BC United

The British Columbia Liberal party announced a name change in an effort to distance itself from the federal leadership baring the Liberal Party name, and will now be known as BC United.

The party’s name change was revealed on Wednesday and comes as part of a rebranding effort following the party’s defeat in the recent provincial election. The BC Liberals, formerly the province’s dominant political force, have struggled to regain popularity after their loss to the NDP in 2017.

The decision to change the party’s name was made after 80% of Liberal members approved of the notion back in November, under the promise that BC Premier David Eby doesn’t call a snap election prior to the fixed election date. The party’s vice president, Caroline Elliot, stated that the name change is a new beginning for the party, and that they are committed to renewing their vision and values. “Many of our members are, true, federal Liberals,” she said, as cited by the Globe and Mail. “Some of them are federal Conservatives. Some of them, most of them probably, are no federal affiliation whatsoever.”

The BC Liberals have faced criticism from some party members who view the name change as an attempt to distance the party from its past and erase its history. Some have expressed concern that the name change could alienate longtime party supporters who have been loyal to the BC Liberals for many years. However, party leadership has defended the decision, stating that it is part of a larger strategy to modernize and reposition the party to better connect with voters in a changing political landscape.

“There’s our diversity across the urban-rural divide,” said Elliot. “There are all kinds of ways that people describe not just our party, but politics generally. What we wanted to represent in our brand is we’re coming together.”
