Canada Nickel Nears Final Permitting Decision on Flagship Crawford Project

Canada Nickel Company (TSXV: CNC) has moved one step closer to a federal green light on its flagship Crawford Nickel Project, with the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada publishing the draft Impact Assessment Report for the project on Tuesday.

The draft report represents the final stage before a federal permitting decision, which the company continues to target for early summer 2026. It also includes the agency’s preliminary conclusions and proposed conditions of approval.

More notably, Crawford is the first mining project in the country to reach this stage under the federal Impact Assessment Act, the more stringent permitting regime that replaced the previous environmental assessment framework when it came into force in 2019.

The newer act broadened the scope of federal review considerably. Beyond environmental effects, projects must now demonstrate positive outcomes across health, social, and economic dimensions, while also addressing the rights of Indigenous peoples, which is a standard that has been widely viewed as a higher bar to clear than the legislation it succeeded.

That makes Crawford something of a test case. The project moved from its first drill holes to a draft Impact Assessment Report in roughly six years, a timeline CEO Mark Selby attributed to the depth of technical work and stakeholder engagement behind the file.

“Crawford has now cleared every major milestone in the federal Impact Assessment process, and we remain firmly on track for a final permitting decision by early this summer,” Selby said in a statement, while also crediting input from federal and provincial authorities, Indigenous Nations, and the public.

Canada Nickel submitted its Impact Statement in November 2024, received agency comments the following May, and filed its responses in December 2025. The Impact Statement phase formally wrapped up in March 2026, when the agency moved the file into the Impact Assessment phase, which is the stage that has now produced Tuesday’s draft report.

Once finalized, the draft report and proposed conditions will be submitted to the federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change and Nature, who is responsible for the ultimate decision under the act.

Crawford, situated within Ontario’s Critical Minerals Corridor, is being positioned as one of the largest nickel sulphide developments globally, with the company eyeing its potential role in anchoring a zero-carbon industrial cluster in the surrounding nickel district. The project, if it receives approval, is expected to average 38,000 tonnes of nickel production annually over a proposed 41 year mine life.

Canada Nickel last traded at $1.75 on the TSX.
