China’s CATL Announces Breakthrough EV Battery with 5-Minute Charging

Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd has developed a second-generation Shenxing lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery that can add 323 miles of range in five minutes, the company announced at Auto Shanghai on Monday.

The world’s largest battery maker demonstrated technology that charges from 5% to 80% in 15 minutes, surpassing rival BYD Co Ltd’s Super-e Platform, which offers 248 miles of range in similar charging time.

The system maintains 93% capacity at temperatures ranging from -30°C to +30°C (-22°F to +86°F) and operates at a 12C charging rate, according to company specifications.

CATL’s integrated sodium-ion technology is capable of delivering 124 miles of range in plug-in hybrids and 310 miles in fully electric vehicles, company representatives said.

The battery design incorporates dual-engine aircraft principles and features graphite-free anodes, which the company says improve temperature resistance compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries.

“The new batteries are promised to deliver [sic] around 200km of range for hybrid vehicles, and 500km for an EV,” CATL documentation states. The company has indicated the batteries are ready for commercialization but has not disclosed specific delivery dates or pricing.

Tesla‘s (Nasdaq: TSLA) quarterly earnings call on Tuesday is expected to address competitive battery technology developments, as Tesla’s current charging systems reach comparable speeds in limited temperature conditions.

CATL confirmed it has no immediate plans to sell directly in the United States, where Chinese auto imports face 100% tariffs.

  1. Loading a 50 KW battery in 5 minutes means a transmission of 600 KW!!! Only large buildings and factories have such a grid connection.

It is a nice excercise without a benefit.
