Defense Metals (TSXV: DEFN) is evaluating a range of strategic alternatives to advance its Wicheeda rare earth project, a process that could encompass strategic partnerships, government supported financing, offtake agreements and broader corporate transactions.
The review comes against a backdrop of share price weakness that management attributes largely to sector wide volatility rather than anything specific to the asset. Executive chairman Guy de Selliers acknowledged the stock’s performance had been disappointing and out of step with the company’s progress over the past year.
The board has offered no timeline and no assurance that a transaction results.
Defense Metals recently wrapped up its 2026 spring drill program, which was designed to feed geotechnical, geochemical and hydrogeological data into an ongoing feasibility study. Pilot-scale flotation testing at SGS Lakefield is nearing completion, with further pilot work planned on the hydrometallurgical circuit to refine process design.
The company also secured conditional government funding tied to infrastructure at Wicheeda, and remains the only rare earth asset among the four projects prioritized by the province of British Columbia.
“The market has understandably experienced periods of volatility, particularly across the junior mining sector,” said president and chief executive Mark Tory, adding that the company’s focus remains on de-risking the project and building the relationships needed to make Wicheeda a supplier of critical rare earth elements.
Wicheeda is a wholly owned, 11,800-hectare carbonatite hosted deposit in British Columbia, sitting near rail, hydroelectric transmission and gas pipeline infrastructure. A 2025 pre-feasibility study outlined a surface-mineable measured and indicated resource of 29.2 million tonnes grading 2.27% total rare earth oxide, alongside 5.5 million tonnes of inferred material grading 1.42%. The project is said to have an after-tax net present value of $992 million, along with an 18.9% IRR.
Defense Metals last traded at $0.15 on the TSX Venture.
