Donald Trump Endorses Jim Jordan for Speaker of the House
Former President Donald Trump has officially endorsed Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) as his choice for the next Speaker of the House, following the ousting of Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) in a rebellion by far-right Republicans.
In a social media post on his platform Truth Social, Trump gave Jordan his “complete” and “total” endorsement, expressing confidence that Jordan would make a “GREAT Speaker of the House.”
Jordan, the Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, has been an outspoken supporter of Trump and recently declared his intention to run for the position of Speaker of the House. Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.), the House Majority Leader and another Trump loyalist, has also announced his candidacy for the role.
Several other Republicans, including Rep. Kevin Hern (R-Okla.), have considered running for the position, and calls for Trump to seek the role himself have also been made by some House Republicans, notably Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.). Trump has indicated that he would consider an interim role as Speaker if necessary but reiterated his focus on the presidential election.
However, installing Trump as Speaker, even temporarily, faces a challenge due to House Republican rules that require a member to step aside if indicted for a felony carrying a potential sentence of two or more years in prison. Trump currently faces 91 felony charges across multiple criminal cases.
Rep. Jim Jordan was previously nominated for the speakership in January by far-right Republicans but maintained his support for McCarthy. Notable allies of Jordan in his bid for Speaker include Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) who filed the motion to kick McCarthy out, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), and Rep. Jim Banks (R-Ind.).
