Writer E. Jean Carroll has received more than $5.6 million from President Donald Trump, court records show, three years after a jury found him liable for sexually abusing and defaming her.
A court docket entry in the Southern District of New York showed $5,625,005.48 was disbursed on July 9 to Kaplan Martin LLP, the law firm representing Carroll. The payment reflects the $5 million jury award from 2023 plus post-judgment interest that accrued while the money sat in a court-controlled escrow account, where Trump had deposited it shortly after the verdict.

The release followed a last-ditch effort by Trump to keep the funds tied up. After the Supreme Court declined on June 29 to hear his appeal, Trump asked the justices on July 6 to reconsider that rejection, a request Judge Lewis Kaplan called a “wrongheaded claim” in denying it the same day, noting such successful filings are “extremely rare birds.” A federal appeals court separately denied Trump’s request for an emergency stay to block the transfer altogether.
“Three years ago, a unanimous nine-person jury found President Trump liable for sexually assaulting and defaming E. Jean Carroll,” Carroll’s attorney, Roberta Kaplan, said in a statement. “Today, we are pleased to report that she has received the damages payment the jury awarded her.”
Kaplan said in a court filing that Carroll, 82, doesn’t plan to touch the money until Trump’s reconsideration request is resolved and intends to put it toward her retirement.

Carroll sued Trump in 2022 after New York temporarily lifted the statute of limitations on old sexual assault claims, alleging he assaulted her in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room in the 1990s. The jury awarded her $5 million in that case. A second trial in 2024, over separate defamation statements Trump made after Carroll went public, resulted in an $83.3 million judgment against him that remains unpaid and under appeal.
