Justin Trudeau and Sophie Gregoire Are Separating

It appears that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau realized she couldn’t bare standing alongside her husband for another federal election cycle and is officially calling it quits after 18 years of marriage.

The couple concurrently announced the separation via their respective Instagram accounts on Wednesday, assuring that they will “remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other.”

The Prime Minister’s Office also confirmed the couple is parting ways by announcing they signed a legal separation agreement. “They have worked to ensure that all legal and ethical steps with regards to their decision to separate have been taken, and will continue to do so moving forward,” read the statement. “Both parents will be a constant presence in their children’s lives and Canadians can expect to often see the family together. The family will be together on vacation, beginning next week.”

The pair’s separation marks the first since Trudeau’s own late father, Pierre Elliot Trudeau, divorced from Margaret Trudeau in 1984, which was also coincidentally the same year the former prime minister abdicated from politics. The announcement also comes at a time when the Liberal party isn’t faring too well amongst Canadians, as the official opposition takes lead in the polls after pointing out the affordability crisis that has worsened under the prime minister’s helm.

Although an official reason for the split was not given, judging by the mark on Trudeau’s forehead earlier this week, perhaps he was talking a little too much when he should have been listening.
