KoBold Metals Raises $537M in Funding Round with Bill Gates’ Support

In a significant move to bolster the transition to renewable energy, KoBold Metals, a U.S.-based exploration company leveraging artificial intelligence, announced it has raised $537 million in equity funding. Backed by notable names such as Bill Gates and leading investment firms, this funding round propels KoBold’s mission to uncover vital minerals essential to clean energy technologies.

KoBold Metals revealed that the recent funding round valued the company at $2.96 billion. Durable Capital Partners LP, along with two T. Rowe Price funds, led the round as new investors. Existing stakeholders, including Gates’ Breakthrough Energy Ventures and Andreessen Horowitz, also contributed to the financing effort. This broad-based investor confidence underscores the growing recognition of KoBold’s innovative approach to mineral exploration.

The firm sets itself apart by utilizing artificial intelligence to locate deposits of critical minerals like copper, lithium, and nickel.

KoBold plans to allocate the new capital toward expanding exploration activities, advancing promising projects, and enhancing its research and development capabilities. One prominent initiative is the Mingomba copper mine in Zambia, one of the largest known undeveloped copper deposits in the world.

The urgency of the energy transition has heightened demand for critical minerals, which are essential for achieving global climate goals. The International Energy Agency estimates that meeting the targets of the Paris Agreement will require a sixfold increase in the production of key minerals by 2040.

Yet, challenges persist. The extraction and refinement of these minerals can have significant environmental and social impacts. KoBold’s use of AI not only improves exploration efficiency but also has the potential to minimize ecological disruptions by targeting deposits more precisely.
