Liberal Party Leads in Canadian Polls, But Conservatives Gain Momentum on Economic Issues

Recent polling data shows the Liberal Party maintaining a lead in Canada’s 2025 federal election, though Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre is gaining ground on key economic issues as affordability concerns increasingly drive voter priorities.

According to data published by Polling Canada on April 15, multiple national polling firms show Liberals with substantial leads over the Conservative Party. Liaison and Angus Reid both show a 6-point Liberal advantage, while Nanos indicates a 7-point lead. Pallas and Pollara both place the Liberals 8 points ahead, with MQO showing the largest margin at +9. Mainstreet Research diverges from this trend, showing Conservatives with a slim 2-point edge.

Despite the overall Liberal lead, an Ipsos poll conducted April 8-10 for Global News reveals Poilievre is making notable gains. The Conservative leader has improved by 6 percentage points since March on “uniting Canadians on changes and investments required to make us less dependent on the US” and gained 3 points on having “the skills to put in place the right government programs to deal with the hardships Canadians will face because of the tariffs being imposed by President Trump.”

While Liberal leader Mark Carney maintains a strong advantage on managing Canada-US relations during Trump’s presidency, with 49% seeing him as “a tough negotiator who would get the best deal for Canada from President Trump” compared to 33% for Poilievre, his lead on this issue has softened. The poll shows more Canadians (+5 points) now believe Carney “would roll over and accept whatever President Trump demands.”

On economic issues, Conservatives now lead the Liberals by 4 percentage points on addressing affordability and cost of living concerns, which 41% of Canadians cite as their top priority – a 5-point jump since late March. Conservatives also hold strong advantages on taxes, interest rates/inflation, and immigration policy.

“Following the stock market crash in early April, concern about the economy has risen in priority,” notes the Ipsos report. “Regarding which party is most capable of addressing these issues, the Liberals and Conservatives are tied, with each party leading on five issues.”
