Mystery Surrounds Death of Belarusian Diplomat After Lukashenko’s Dismissal

Former Belarusian Ambassador to Germany Denis Sidorenko died under unclear and controversial circumstances. The details surrounding his death remain murky, with various reports suggesting either a heart attack or suicide following intense scrutiny by the Belarusian State Security Committee (KGB).

Sidorenko, who served as ambassador from 2016 until his dismissal in March 2024, had reportedly been under severe pressure since his return to Belarus. Independent Belarusian media outlets, including Zerkalo and Nasha Niva, indicated that the diplomat had been subjected to continuous polygraph tests and interrogations by the KGB.

The Belarusian Foreign Ministry confirmed Sidorenko’s death but did not specify the cause. A statement released by the ministry praised Sidorenko as a “talented and responsible diplomat” and a “patriot.” The statement added, “This is a big loss for the diplomatic family of Belarus.”

However, the ambiguity surrounding the exact cause of death has fueled speculation. Major outlets like Pozirk initially reported that Sidorenko died of a heart attack on June 24. Conversely, Nasha Niva claimed that Sidorenko died by suicide on June 23, suggesting he jumped from a high-rise apartment in Minsk due to relentless KGB scrutiny.

According to a post from Igor Sushko, an analyst on Eastern European affairs, Sidorenko fell from a high-rise window immediately after a polygraph test and interrogation by the KGB. Sushko’s post adds a layer of suspicion to the diplomat’s death, reflecting the broader climate of fear and repression under President Alexander Lukashenko’s regime.

Opposition politician Pavel Latushko, who also served as an ambassador, confirmed that Sidorenko had issues with polygraph tests. Latushko suggested that the diplomat’s inability to pass these tests likely led to significant stress, contributing to his death.

“The main cause of death was psychological, triggered by the stressful employment situation,” Latushko told Zerkalo. He speculated that questions about Sidorenko’s loyalty to Lukashenko during the polygraph tests could have caused considerable distress.

Another former Foreign Ministry official highlighted the unusual nature of Sidorenko’s dismissal and its implications for Belarus’s diplomatic relations with Germany. The removal of Sidorenko, without a clear replacement, may indicate deeper, undisclosed negotiations and internal conflicts within the Belarusian government.
