People In Louisiana Now Need To Submit ID Before They Can Access Porn Sites

Louisiana’s ~porn fans~ will now need to submit a government-issued ID to go to porn sites like Pornhub and RedTube.

A recently passed law, known as Act 440, now requires age verification to access any website that contains at least 33.3% pornographic or sexually explicit material.

The legislation was introduced by Republican state representative Laurie Schlegel in February and was signed into law by Governor John Bel Edwards in June.

“Pornography is destroying our children and they’re getting unlimited access to it on the internet and so if the pornography companies aren’t going to be responsible, I thought we need to go ahead and hold them accountable,” said Schlegel.

The system basically turns sites the law considers pornographic into gated content, and to enter, users must verify their age using an ID verification app called Louisiana Wallet (or LA Wallet) where they’ll upload photos of their driver’s license or state ID. Twitter user Public Defendering shows what the process looks like.

Porn sites and other companies that may need to verify a user’s age through the app are not allowed to retain any information. And as Public Defendering points out, the app, which is developed by Envoc, doesn’t replace carrying the physical ID, all it does is…verify your age.

The law makes it the responsibility of the website to make sure that it uses age verification, and Schlegel warns of consequences for those who fail to comply.

“Someone could sue on behalf of their child; they can sue if children are getting access to pornography. So, it would be up to the user to sue the company for not verifying age first,” she added.

One thing’s for sure, the new law will significantly improve the creativity of minors in Louisiana.

If you think this is bonkers, Republican Senator Mike Lee of Utah has proposed a similar measure that would require age verification to access porn sites and effectively criminalize online porn, to “shield children’s retinas” nationwide.
