Poland Investigates Three Rail Sabotage Attacks Amid Hybrid-War Escalation

  • Poland’s leaders now frame the weekend rail explosions as part of an escalating pattern of foreign-directed sabotage pushing the country into what is referred as pre-war phase.

Poland reported up to three coordinated acts of sabotage on the Warsaw–Lublin rail corridor over the weekend, marking what Prime Minister Donald Tusk called an “unprecedented act” targeting civilian safety and a key supply route for aid bound for Ukraine.

Authorities confirmed at least one deliberate explosion in the village of Mika that destroyed track infrastructure, with two additional incidents involving damaged power traction and a severed metal clamp on the same line now under investigation.

Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński said experts verified “beyond all doubt” that an explosive device detonated in Mika, adding that the evidence collected on site is “abundant” and expected to rapidly identify the perpetrators. He said investigators are treating the second incident as “very probable” sabotage, while a third case confirmed Sunday night involved power-line damage and a rail component cut by passing trains.

The blast occurred on Line 7, a high-volume route carrying roughly 115 trains daily from Warsaw through Lublin toward the Ukrainian border, according to Infrastructure Minister Dariusz Klimczak. The first alert came at 6:40 a.m., when a PKP Intercity driver reported track irregularities when a Mazovian Railways train subsequently stopped at the site under caution procedures.

Klimczak said repairs began immediately on a separate section near Puławy-Azoty and that full two-track service on Line 7 will resume once investigators clear the site.

Security services coordinator Tomasz Siemoniak said the attacks mirror a broader campaign: since January 2024, Polish authorities have detained 55 individuals linked to foreign-directed diversionary activity, with several arrested and some already expelled or convicted. He warned that the latest events indicate “a new stage” of targeting critical railway infrastructure, consistent with prior warnings of hybrid operations conducted on behalf of hostile intelligence services.

A specialized team from the National Prosecutor’s Office, CBŚP, and ABW has opened proceedings on diversion and on attempted land-transport catastrophe. Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek noted penalties for diversion begin at 10 years’ imprisonment and extend to life.

Tusk reiterated that the line’s role in transporting aid to Ukraine elevates the attack’s strategic importance. Polish defense officials have also broadened the warning: Chief of the General Staff Gen. Wiesław Kukuła said Poland is effectively in a pre-war phase, citing Russian efforts to erode trust in state institutions and prepare conditions for potential aggression.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius echoed the urgency, warning this summer may have been “Europe’s last peaceful one” and citing assessments that a Russian attack on NATO could occur as early as 2028. He said Germany will expand conscription screening in 2027 and build a large reserve force in preparation for heightened regional tensions.
