Popular Ajax Bakery Forced to Relocate Due to Zoning Bylaw Complaint
Biscuits to Baskets, a family-run bakery and café in Ajax, Ontario, is being forced to relocate due to a zoning bylaw complaint. The business, which gained significant attention after a glowing review from popular food critic Keith Lee on TikTok, has been operating out of a garage on 49 Beatty Rd. for the past six years.
According to the Town of Ajax, a complaint prompted officials to inform Biscuits to Baskets that they are not operating in compliance with the zoning bylaw, which requires the business to run out of the house, not the garage. The news came as a shock to the family, who had been running the business for 20 years and had set up a grab-and-go space in the garage five years ago.
The town has provided the business with several options to continue operating successfully, including moving the operation to the primary dwelling or expanding to a commercial storefront. Biscuits to Baskets is currently seeking the public’s help in finding a new home, with a preference to remain in Ajax.
In response to the situation, Keith Lee has started a campaign to help fund a new retail space for the business. Local supporter Suzi Gurrasi has also set up an online petition asking the public to show its support for the longtime local business and urging the Town of Ajax to review its bylaw for small businesses specifically related to dwellings on properties.
As of June 1, Biscuits to Baskets will temporarily operate out of the front of the Beatty Road house while the search for a new location continues.
