RCMP Investigates Mass Email Threat to Jewish Organizations Across Canada

A wave of threatening emails sent to over 100 Jewish institutions across Canada has prompted a nationwide investigation led by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The threats, received early Wednesday morning, targeted synagogues, community centers, and other Jewish organizations, as well as some hospitals.

The RCMP’s Integrated National Security Enforcement Team is spearheading the investigation, working to trace the origin of the emails and coordinate with international partners. Similar threats were reported in New Delhi, India, suggesting a potentially broader campaign.

Local police forces in multiple cities, including Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, and Calgary, responded to the threats by conducting sweeps of the targeted locations. No explosives or suspicious packages were found, and authorities have deemed the immediate risk to be low.

Jewish community leaders expressed concern over the incident but emphasized their resilience. Rabbi Reuben Poupko of Montreal stated, “Jewish life went on as normal — with heightened vigilance, yes, but we understand that the intent is to frighten and to sabotage normal life. And we won’t allow that to happen.”

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned the threats on social media, calling them “blatant antisemitism.” Other political figures, including Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante, also spoke out against the intimidation attempts.

The incident occurs against a backdrop of rising antisemitism in Canada. B’nai Brith Canada reported a doubling of antisemitic incidents in 2023, including violent acts targeting Jewish institutions.

While the immediate threat appears to be low, the RCMP and local law enforcement agencies continue to investigate the source of the emails and maintain heightened vigilance around Jewish community spaces. Jewish leaders have called for increased efforts to combat the normalization of antisemitic rhetoric and extremism in Canadian society.
