Tesla Recalls Cybertrucks Over Detaching Exterior Panels

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) announced today a recall of nearly 46,000 Cybertruck vehicles in the United States due to a potential safety hazard involving detachable exterior panels. The recall affects all Cybertrucks manufactured from November 2023 through February 27, 2025, representing the majority of these vehicles on American roads.

The issue stems from a stainless-steel exterior trim panel, known as the cant rail, which may detach from the vehicle while in motion. Tesla acknowledged that this could create a road hazard for other motorists, increasing the risk of accidents. The company plans to address the problem by replacing the rail panel assembly with a new version that meets durability testing requirements, at no cost to customers.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notified Tesla of the issue on February 21, 2025, following a vehicle owner’s report of a detached rail panel. Tesla has since identified 151 warranty claims potentially related to this problem, although no collisions or injuries have been reported.

The Cybertruck, Tesla’s unconventional electric pickup, has faced challenges even before this recall. Demand for the vehicle showed signs of weakening towards the end of 2024, following multiple production delays. This latest setback could further impact consumer confidence in the model.

While Tesla has not disclosed specific delivery numbers for the Cybertruck, analysts estimate that the recalled vehicles constitute a significant portion of those currently on the road.
