Canada: Despite Targeting Younger Voters, Liberals Pre-Budget Spending Fails to Sway Youth Support

The latest federal budget, touted as a boon for younger Canadians, is in danger of falling flat with its intended audience. A recent Abacus Data survey found no significant shift in support for the Liberal government among those aged 18-29, despite a flurry of pre-budget announcements aimed squarely at this demographic.

“We see no evidence that the pre-budget announcements have moved the dial for the Liberals,” said David Coletto, CEO of Abacus Data. The survey, conducted April 11-16 before the budget release, showed the Conservatives maintaining a commanding 20-point lead nationally, including a stronghold across all age groups.

While disapproval of the federal government’s performance dropped 11 points among 18-29-year-olds compared to the first quarter average, impressions of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau remained stubbornly negative, with a net score of -30 in this cohort.

Crucially, only 17% of youth said their impression of Trudeau was improving, virtually unchanged from before all pre-budget announcements.

In a series of personality/competence assessments pitting Trudeau against Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, younger Canadians decisively favored Poilievre in crisis scenarios like putting out a fire or leading a road trip. Trudeau narrowly edged out Poilievre on hosting a party and looking after children, underscoring a public hunger for leaders who project practicality and problem-solving prowess.

“Canadians are seeking leaders who are not only visionary but pragmatic problem solvers,” noted Coletto. “Poilievre’s perceived superiority in crisis management and everyday competence mirrors the electorate’s current mindset.”
