Donald Trump Claims His Passports Were Seized During Mar-a-Lago Raid

Former President Donald Trump is accusing the FBI of stealing his passports during their raid at his Mar-a-Lago residence last week.

“Wow. In the raid by the FBI of Mar-a-Lago, they stole my three Passports (one expired), along with everything else. This is an assault on a political opponent at a level never before seen in our country. Third World,” he wrote in a post on his Truth Social media account.

The former president is likely referring to his regular blue passport issued to citizens of the US, as well as a red ‘diplomatic’ passport that was granted to to him when he was in the White House. It remains unknown if the travel documents were actually taken, and if they were, if it was because the FBI deems him as a flight risk. During Monday’s raid of Trump’s home, the FBI seized a number of boxes containing various documents and photographs, including files labeled ‘top secret.’

According to the details in the FBI’s federal warrant, a total of 27 boxes of documents were taken by agents, allegedly also including documents considered attorney-client privilege. “Oh great! It has just been learned that the FBI, in its now famous raid of Mar-a-Lago, took boxes of privileged ‘attorney-client’ material, and also ‘executive’ privileged material, which they knowingly should not have taken,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Sunday, requesting that the FBI return the papers.

As per the Presidential Records Act, outgoing presidents and vice presidents are required to hand over all sensitive material and documents to the National Archives and Records Administration at the end of their term. So far, Trump has given back 15 boxes of material earlier in 2022, but the FBI’s long-running investigation into the documents still in the former president’s possession were the subject of Monday’s raid of his Mar-a-Lago residence.
