Musk Says SpaceX “Will Be Worth More Than The Rest Of Earth”

  • Musk’s planetary valuation claim turns SpaceX’s investment case into something conventional financial models cannot price without first assuming the company successfully creates economies beyond Earth.

Elon Musk wrote Thursday that SpaceX would be “worth more than the rest of Earth if we accomplish our goals,” escalating an already aggressive market debate over how much investors should pay for businesses that do not yet exist, operating in places where there are currently no customers, currencies, or securities regulators.

The statement followed an online discussion about SpaceX’s long-term potential. It was not accompanied by a forecast, financial model, or estimated date for the moment when one corporation might theoretically overtake the combined value of terrestrial civilization.

The hyperbole is not unusual because SpaceX is already testing the upper limits of conventional valuation. The company entered public markets in June at roughly a $1.75 trillion valuation after raising at least $75 billion, according to Reuters. Its shares subsequently pushed its market capitalization above $2 trillion before retreating from their post-listing peak.

Financial markets, however, remain stubbornly located on Earth. In as so far as measuring the worth of the rest of the Earth, the International Monetary Fund estimated the world economy would produce approximately $126.3 trillion in nominal output during 2026. That figure is GDP, not a market valuation, making any direct comparison with SpaceX’s equity value economically messy.

Musk’s claim therefore cannot be tested using today’s economic accounts. It becomes internally possible only if SpaceX helps establish substantial new economic activity outside Earth and then captures a meaningful portion of that activity.

In other words, SpaceX would not merely have to dominate the existing space industry. It would need to make the addressable market geographically larger.

Musk has previously described the scenario in similarly expansive terms. In an earlier post, he said that if SpaceX achieved its “absurdly difficult goal,” it would become worth many orders of magnitude more than Earth’s economy.

“Yes, I need to make sure SpaceX stays focused on making life multiplanetary and extending consciousness to the stars, not pandering to someone’s bullshit quarterly earnings bonus!” he wrote. “Obviously, IF SpaceX succeeds in this absurdly difficult goal, it will be worth many orders of magnitude more than the economy of Earth, but don’t expect entirely smooth sailing along the way.”

SpaceX’s stated ambitions, according to The Guardian, include reusable heavy-lift transportation, satellite communications, space-based computing, lunar infrastructure, resource development, and eventually permanent human settlements beyond Earth. Its prospectus placed Mars colonization, asteroid mining, and orbital data centers within the company’s long-range commercial narrative.

None of those markets currently produces revenue at anything approaching planetary scale.

However, SpaceX’s existing operations are more tangible. The company generated an estimated $18.7 billion in 2025 revenue but recorded a roughly $4.9 billion loss, according to figures disclosed around its flotation. Starlink was its only profitable major segment, while its rocket and artificial-intelligence operations continued absorbing capital.

Its amended SEC registration filing showed that the Space segment generated $619 million in revenue during Q1 2026 and posted a $662 million operating loss.

Beyond this, Wall Street is already pricing the science fiction. Analyst models increasingly treat Starship, SpaceX’s rocket system, not merely as a launch vehicle but as infrastructure capable of opening entirely new industries.

The Financial Times reported that Raymond James placed an $800 price target on SpaceX, implying a valuation above $10 trillion. Citi’s more optimistic scenario reached approximately $12 trillion, while Morgan Stanley’s range varied sharply depending on Starship’s progress.

Those targets would make SpaceX larger than any present-day listed company. They would still leave it far short of Musk’s Earth-plus valuation thought experiment.

The distinction is important. Wall Street’s most bullish projections remain based largely on businesses that could produce measurable cash flow within the next several years, including Starlink subscriptions, launch services, defence contracts, satellite infrastructure, and orbital computing.

Musk’s claim belongs to a different category. It assumes SpaceX succeeds not only as a company, but as an economic architect for a multiplanetary civilization.

That may be the ultimate bull case. It is also conveniently beyond the forecast period of every analyst currently covering the stock.
