Fox News Less Trusted Than Satire in Canada, Survey Finds

According to a recent survey on media trust in Canada, Fox News has emerged as the least trusted news source among Canadians, even falling behind a satirical website in terms of credibility. The study, conducted in June 2024 by Pollara Strategic Insights, reveals a stark contrast in how Canadians perceive various news outlets.

The survey found that Fox News received a net trust score of -32, the lowest among all media organizations evaluated. This places it below The Beaverton, a Canadian satire website, which scored -4. The findings suggest that Canadians are more skeptical of Fox News’ reporting than they are of content explicitly labeled as satire.

In comparison, other international news sources fared better. The BBC earned a net trust score of +34, while CNN received +22. Among Canadian outlets, The Weather Network topped the list with a score of +58, followed by major networks like CBC (+46), CTV (+45), and Global News (+43).

The study also highlighted a significant partisan divide in media trust. While Liberal voters generally showed higher trust in most mainstream media outlets, Conservative voters were more likely to trust Fox News, although still giving it a negative score overall.

Building on the previous findings, the survey also revealed a concerning trend: trust in media has declined across the board compared to 2023.

Every media outlet included in the study saw a decrease in trust levels over the past year. Even traditionally well-regarded networks like CTV and Global News experienced a 9-point drop in trust. The CBC, while still maintaining a relatively high trust score, saw a slight 1-point decrease. This widespread erosion of trust affected both mainstream and alternative media sources, suggesting a growing skepticism among Canadians towards news media in general.
