FPX Nickel Launches Scoping Study For BC-Based Nickel Sulphate Refinery

FPX Nickel (TSXV: FPX) is examining the feasibility of developing a nickel sulphate refinery, which is intended to supply the nickel needed for the EV battery industry. The company has reportedly commenced a standalone study for such a refinery, which is expected to be completed in Q1 of 2025.

The study is examining the feasibility of a refinery capable of producing 32,000 tonnes of nickel in nickel sulphate per year from awaruite concentrate, which is expected to support the manufacture of 450,000 electric vehicles. Optimization of the purification flowsheet, initially proposed under a preliminary feasibility study for its Baptiste Nickel project, is said to have improved margins for the refinery while cutting waste handling and disposal risks.

The scoping study is expected to include a detailed technical and economic analysis for the facility, which envisions the refinery being based in an urban region of central BC, as part of a larger integrated battery materials processing hub.

“Awaruite presents an unparalleled opportunity to significantly expand North America’s battery material supply chain, all without the need to either displace or add smelting capacity. As we close-out our Value Engineering for Baptiste, we are excited at the new value basis for our large-scale, long-life, high margin, and low-carbon project,” commented Andrew Osterloh, Senior VP of projects and operations for FPX.

FPX Nickel last traded at $0.28 on the TSX Venture.
