IMPACT Silver (TSXV: IPT) is halting mining operations at its Plomosas Mine in Chihuahua, Mexico. The company announced Friday a temporary suspension of underground mining operations, citing a need to overhaul its cost structure and geological approach after recent performance reviews.
The decision comes as management looks to tighten capital allocation. According to the company, the current mine plan at Plomosas, a high-grade zinc project, struggled with development intensity and grade variability, making consistent economic results difficult to achieve without continued fresh capital.
CEO Fred Davidson characterized the move as a measured step aimed at long-term value. Rather than pushing through inefficient cycles, the company will use the downtime to refine its geological models and optimize mine plans. The goal is to return with better grade control and lower unit costs in the coming quarters, although no definitive timeline was provided.
IMPACT isn’t walking away from the site, with the company stating they intend to keep surface infrastructure and the processing plant operational. The company is currently in advanced talks with third parties to source alternative mineral feed from nearby projects to provide potential cash flow.
Financially, IMPACT remains on relatively solid ground compared to many of its junior mining peers. With over $35 million in cash and a steady flow of revenue from its Zacualpan silver-gold operations, the company appears to have the runway to navigate this transition without a desperate dash for funding.
While underground work stops, exploration will not. IMPACT plans to continue testing targets along a six-kilometer prospective trend at Plomosas, hoping to map out higher-quality mineralization that can support a more predictable restart.
IMPACT Silver last traded at $0.235 on the TSX Venture.
