Jasper Fire: “Potentially 30% – 50% Structural Damage” Says Premier Smith

Photos have begun to emerge from Jasper following a massive forest fire that hit the town overnight. Before authorities ceased providing updates late Wednesday night, the fire was said to be moving at up to fifteen metres per second, with flames as much as 400 feet high.

Few images have been made available, given that the town was forced to evacuate essential workers, and even firefights that did not have breathing apparatus’. Footage that has been made available as of today however shows that at least a portion of the town has been destroyed.

Not all of the town is believed to have been lost however, with current reports suggesting only the western portion of the town was impacted by the fire.

The official Jasper National Park account from Parks Canada however has indicated that the map has not been entirely verified for accuracy. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith meanwhile in a morning press conference indicated that “potentially 30 to 50 per cent structural damage” in terms of damage to the entire town.
