Joe Biden Officially Announces Bid for Re-Election

US President Joe Biden formally launched his 2024 campaign on Tuesday, calling on voters to let him “finish the job” of fighting for personal freedom and democracy in a three-minute video announcement.

In the video, which starts with images from the January 6 riots, Biden says that when he ran for presidency four years ago, it was a battle for the soul of America, and he says it still is.

“The question we’re facing is whether in the years ahead we have more freedom or less freedom, more rights or fewer,” he says. “I know what I want the answer to be and I think you do, too. This is not a time to be complacent. That’s why I’m running for re-election.”

The long-awaited announcement may mean another face-off between Biden and former president Donald Trump. Trump announced his campaign in November last year and he, by far, remains the leading Republican candidate in the polls.

Biden, who prevented Trump from clinching a second term in 2020, is the first octogenarian president in US history, and he would be 86 by the time he finishes his second term if he wins. Previous polls have shown public concern about his age and whether he’s still fit to hold the highest office.

The announcement allows Biden to begin raising funds and hiring staff for his campaign. The Democratic National Committee, which per their last financial statement currently has $28.6 million banked, will serve as Biden’s built-in infrastructure.

He has named Julie Chavez Rodriguez as his campaign manager, she is a White House senior adviser and the granddaughter of the late labor leader Cesar Chavez.

Quentin Fulks, Senator Raphael Warnock’s campaign manager, will be principal deputy campaign manager.
