Mark Carney’s Liberals Clinch Majority Government with Projected Toronto Byelection Win

Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberals have secured a majority government with a decisive win in the Toronto riding of University-Rosedale, pushing their seat count to 172, CBC News projects. This marks the first federal majority since 2019, nearly a year after the last general election.

The victory in University-Rosedale, a Liberal stronghold encompassing the University of Toronto’s St. George campus and parts of downtown Toronto, came as no surprise. The riding was previously held by former cabinet minister Chrystia Freeland, who resigned earlier this year to take on a special economic advisory role for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The Liberals nominated physician and academic Danielle Martin as their candidate, who fended off challenges from Conservative Don Hodgson, NDP’s Serena Purdy, and Green Party’s Andrew Massey.

With results from 15 polls reported by 9:35 p.m. Eastern on Monday, the win tipped the balance for Carney’s party. The Liberals had been just one seat shy of a majority after five opposition politicians crossed the floor to join the ruling party in recent months.

Elsewhere, two other ridings remain in contention. Scarborough Southwest, another Liberal bastion, and the closely fought Terrebonne, Quebec, are still awaiting final tallies, though their outcomes will not alter the majority status now secured.

The path to this narrow majority reflects a calculated consolidation of power under Carney’s leadership. The addition of University-Rosedale’s seat provides a buffer for the Liberals to advance their legislative agenda without reliance on opposition support.

Economic policy, a cornerstone of Carney’s platform given his background as a former central banker, may now see accelerated implementation. Market observers note that a majority could streamline decisions on fiscal stimulus and trade agreements, areas where coalition dynamics previously slowed progress.

As of the latest count, the Liberals’ 172 seats stand as a clear mandate, setting the stage for Carney to push forward with key priorities through 2026.
