Poland Invokes NATO Article 4 After Shooting Russian Drones Violating Its Airspace

  • Poland says 19 objects crossed its airspace overnight, shot down those posing threats and invoked NATO Article 4 as airports closed and allied jets scrambled.

Poland shot down drones that violated its airspace on Wednesday after reporting 19 intrusions during a large Russian strike on Ukraine—prompting Prime Minister Donald Tusk to invoke NATO’s Article 4 and temporarily closing major airports.

Warsaw framed the overnight operation as the first known instance of a NATO member firing during Russia’s war in Ukraine, describing the repeated violations as “an act of aggression.”

Polish and allied aircraft—including Polish F-16s, Dutch F-35s, NATO AWACS and refueling assets—were mobilized after radar tracked more than 10 objects, with those posing danger “neutralized,” the Operational Command said. By morning, the military declared the operation concluded.

Tusk said he had activated Article 4—under which any ally can demand consultations when its security is threatened—and briefed NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, as the alliance “consulted closely” with Poland.

“We are dealing with a large-scale provocation… The situation is serious,” Tusk said, adding that “the fact that these drones… were shot down changes the political situation.”

NATO, according to one source, viewed the incursion as intentional but was not treating it as an “attack.”

Warsaw’s Chopin Airport suspended operations for hours before reopening with delays, while Lublin remained closed, and traffic shifted west of normal airways amid NOTAMs citing “unplanned military activity.”

Kyiv said Russia launched 415 drones and 40 missiles overnight, including at least eight Iranian-made Shaheds aimed toward Poland—“an extremely dangerous precedent for Europe” that requires “a joint response by all partners,” President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said. Early indications suggested the European airspace violations were intentional rather than accidental, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.

“Russia’s war is escalating, not ending… we must raise the cost on Moscow,” Kallas added.

Russia denies

Russia’s RIA news agency quoted a diplomat calling Warsaw’s claims “groundless,” saying Poland offered no proof the shot down drones were Russian. The Kremlin has long maintained it seeks no confrontation with NATO, even as allied capitals catalog repeated cross-border drone or missile spillovers since 2022.

The incident sharpened sanctions talk on both sides of the Atlantic. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen urged more penalties on Russia, including measures targeting shadow fleet tankers moving its oil and third-country buyers. President Donald Trump has signaled willingness to move to a second phase of sanctions after months of peace talks.

Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky called for stronger NATO air defenses on the eastern flank. Kallas backed EU initiatives such as the Eastern Border Shield to harden infrastructure and shorten response times to incursions. On the night itself, allied fighters and surveillance platforms joined Polish assets over the east, according to officials.

Poland’s military urged residents—especially in the Podlaskie, Mazowieckie and Lubelskie regions—to remain indoors while forces hunted debris from downed drones. The army emphasized that services were “actively working to locate the downed objects” and warned of hazards at crash sites.
