The US-Poland relationship hit a new low on Thursday when US ambassador Tom Rose publicly announced the embassy would have “no further dealings, contacts, or communications” with Włodzimierz Czarzasty, the Speaker (Marshal) of the Sejm, effective immediately.
The trigger was Czarzasty’s refusal to support a coordinated effort to nominate President Donald Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, launched by US House Speaker Mike Johnson and Israeli Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana and framed as an international co-sign campaign by parliamentary leaders.
Effective immediately, we will have no further dealings, contacts, or communications with Marshal of the Sejm Czarzasty, whose outrageous and unprovoked insults directed against President Trump @POTUS has made himself a serious impediment to our excellent relations with Prime…

Czarzasty rejected new US-led platforms like his Board of Peace as “deceptive,” argued security should rest in the EU, NATO, the UN, and the WHO, and said Trump destabilises these organisations through “transactional politics” that often breaks principles, values, and international law.
He also cited Trump’s comments about Polish soldiers on missions and referenced Trump’s “instrumental treatment” of other territories, including Greenland, as reasons for refusing to back the Nobel request.
“He does not deserve it,” Czarzasty asserted.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk then intervened publicly, posting that “allies should respect, not lecture, each other.” Rose responded that Tusk’s message may have been addressed to him by mistake and should’ve been intended for Czarzasty.
“As I’m sure you also know, I will always defend my President without hesitation, exception or apology,” Rose ended.

I’m assuming your thoughtful and well-articulated message was sent to me by mistake, because surely you intended it for the Speaker of the Sejm, Włodzimierz Czarzasty, who’s despicable, disrespectful and insulting comments about President Trump @POTUS… https://t.co/wkcepBNJnS
Czarzasty responded by reaffirming the substance of his refusal while stressing that he respects the US as a key partner but would not shift on “fundamental” matters for Poles.
Zgodnie ze swoimi wartościami stanąłem w obronie polskich żołnierzy walczących na misjach i nie poparłem kandydatury prezydenta @realDonaldTrump do pokojowej nagrody Nobla.

Domestic blowback widened when Polish MP Roman Giertych addressed Rose in an open letter, calling the cutoff “outrageous,” asserting ambassadors no longer get to signal who should hold office in Poland, and comparing the Nobel pressure to Emperor Nero’s vanity and decline-era politics.
Poland won't applaud Trump’s vanity project, the Nobel Peace Prize.

Today a major diplomatic row broke out between the U.S. and Poland because Włodzimierz Czarzasty (the Speaker of the Sejm) took a very public stand against Donald Trump.
The catalyst was a formal request from… pic.twitter.com/hQplgmiYw4
Rose also got into a public exchange on X with a Polish law student, reported to be Kacper Kamiński, after the student essentially told him to “go home,” and Rose fired back with a line that read like a troop-withdrawal hint, asking whether the US should “take all our soldiers and equipment with us.” The post seems to have been deleted as of press time.
