Rogers Communications is set to become the sole owner of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment after agreeing to pay $4.35 billion for Larry Tanenbaum’s Kilmer Sports Inc., which held a 25 per cent ownership position in the sports empire.
The transaction hands Rogers full control of one of the most valuable sports portfolios in the world. The MLSE umbrella covers the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Toronto Raptors, Toronto FC, the Toronto Argonauts, and the AHL’s Toronto Marlies, along with Scotiabank Arena. The company also holds operating interests in Coca-Cola Coliseum and BMO Field.
Rogers already held a majority position in MLSE before Monday’s announcement. Layered on top of its existing assets, the Toronto Blue Jays, Rogers Centre, Sportsnet, and broadcast partnerships with the NHL, NBA, MLB, and Live Nation, the acquisition consolidates an unusually broad grip on Canadian professional sports under a single corporate umbrella.
CEO Tony Staffieri framed the deal as a strategic turning point, pointing to the combination of sports content and connectivity as a competitive differentiator in a crowded market. “This is a defining moment for Rogers,” he said in a press release.
Closing is expected in the fourth quarter of 2026, pending league approvals, with Rogers planning to use its committed liquidity to finance the purchase. The company has also previously flagged plans to sell a minority stake in its consolidated sports, media and entertainment assets within the next year, which suggests full MLSE ownership is part of a broader portfolio repositioning rather than a straightforward balance-sheet expansion.
At $4.35 billion for a 25 per cent slice, the implied total enterprise value for MLSE lands well north of $17 billion. That figure reflects how dramatically the valuations of major professional sports franchises have climbed, particularly in markets where competition for top-tier teams remains limited.
