Tesla Leads Fatal Crash Rates Among Major Car Brands Studied
Tesla (Nasdaq: TSLA) shows the highest fatal accident rate among five major car manufacturers analyzed, according to new research by automotive research firm iSeeCars examining US crash data from 2018 to 2022.
The electric vehicle maker recorded 5.6 fatal accidents per billion miles driven, leading the studied brands and doubling the overall industry average of 2.8. The study ranked Kia second at 5.5, followed by Buick at 4.8, Dodge at 4.4, and Hyundai at 3.9 deaths per billion miles.
In the SUV category, Tesla’s Model Y recorded 10.6 fatal accidents per billion miles, ranking third behind the Hyundai Venue at 13.9 and Honda CR-V Hybrid at 13.2.
The analysis draws from the US Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), examining model years 2018-2022. Researchers normalized crash data against total vehicle miles traveled and excluded heavy-duty trucks and low-volume models.
“New cars are safer than they’ve ever been,” said Karl Brauer, iSeeCars Executive Analyst. “But these safety features are being countered by distracted driving and higher rates of speed, leading to rising accident and death rates in recent years.”
The research shows small cars consistently face higher risks, with compact and subcompact vehicles experiencing 3.6 deaths per billion miles compared to 2.0 for larger vehicles.
