Thailand Becomes AWS’s New Digital Hub with $5 Billion Investment

Amazon Web Services, a subsidiary of Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN), has announced the launch of the AWS Asia Pacific (Thailand) Region. The development is part of AWS’s expansion into Southeast Asia, underscoring Thailand’s growing importance as a regional technology hub. The new region, comprising three availability zones, marks a step in AWS’s efforts to support Thailand’s digital transformation while strengthening its position as a leader in cloud computing.

AWS’s investment of more than $5 billion over the next decade will significantly contribute to Thailand’s economy. The tech giant estimates this initiative will add approximately $10 billion to the country’s gross domestic product and create over 11,000 full-time equivalent jobs annually in sectors like construction, engineering, and telecommunications.

“I am pleased that Thailand’s potential and readiness have been recognized by one of the world’s leading companies,” said Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra. “I look forward to AWS playing a pivotal role, in partnership with the government, in advancing Thailand toward a more inclusive digital society and expanding access to digital services for all citizens.”

Notable customers leveraging AWS’s technology in Thailand include Bank of Ayudhya Public Company Limited, Charoen Pokphand Group (CP Group), and the Stock Exchange of Thailand, enabling scalability for over 3.6 million users while maintaining stringent security and compliance standards.

The Thailand Region is AWS’s 35th geographic region globally, bringing its total number of availability zones to 111. Additional regions are planned for Mexico, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, and Europe. Each AWS region operates independently.

Thailand joins the ranks of countries with AWS Local Zones, which were launched in Bangkok in 2022 to deliver ultra-low-latency services. AWS has also established six Amazon CloudFront edge locations in Thailand since 2020, accelerating data delivery for Thai customers.
