Four separate fact-checking efforts have found no evidence that the hospital photo Sen. Mitch McConnell’s office released last weekend was faked, directly contradicting the online claims that fueled days of speculation about his health.
Snopes ran the image through multiple AI-detection tools and checked it directly for SynthID, the hidden watermark Google and OpenAI embed in images their models generate. It found none, and its close inspection of the positioning of McConnell’s hand, his wife’s arm, and the shadows around them turned up nothing suggesting manipulation.
Snopes also caught a separate error from X’s chatbot Grok, which had wrongly told users the photo carried a SynthID watermark and that McConnell’s office had released only a text statement with no photo at all, conflating this image with a different one Snopes had debunked days earlier.

Fact-checking outlet Lead Stories traced a viral close-up image of supposedly garbled, AI-generated text on the newspaper back to its actual source, an AI hallucination created when someone tried to digitally zoom in on the low-resolution original rather than evidence that the photo itself was fabricated.
Separately, PolitiFact consulted Matthew Stamm, a Drexel University professor who researches multimedia forensics, who ran the photo through a pixel-analysis technique developed in his lab built to detect AI-generated images and found no evidence of manipulation.
PolitiFact separately addressed a competing theory that the photo was genuine but recycled from an earlier hospitalization and found no trace of the image or anything resembling it existing online before July 12.
The Washington Post, whose July 12 Sports section McConnell is seen holding in the photo, reviewed the original file from his office and said its metadata indicated the image was taken that same day. The paper also consulted Hany Farid, a digital forensics professor at the University of California, Berkeley, who found no facial distortions in McConnell or his wife, Elaine Chao, consistent with AI generation and described the room’s lighting as plausible.
McConnell’s statement, released alongside the photo, said he fell and was briefly unconscious before being hospitalized, and that he later developed a mild case of pneumonia.

Doctors ruled out a heart attack, stroke, concussion, broken bones, tumors, and hemorrhage, and attributed the fall in part to complications from childhood polio. McConnell has since moved to a rehabilitation facility and has not been cleared to return to the Senate floor.
