Trump Weighs Firing Attorney General Bondi Over Epstein Files Fallout

President Trump is considering dismissing Attorney General Pam Bondi, driven by mounting frustration over her handling of the Epstein files and perceived shortcomings at the Justice Department, according to sources familiar with the discussions. This potential shakeup, which could see Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin take her place, marks a significant shift in Trump’s approach to cabinet stability during his second term.

The president’s dissatisfaction with Bondi has been simmering for months. Her management of the Epstein files, linked to the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein who died by suicide in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges, has emerged as a political liability among Trump’s supporter base. Additionally, Trump has criticized her effectiveness as a communicator and the Justice Department’s lack of aggressiveness in prosecuting his political adversaries.

Trump has also expressed frustration over specific legal setbacks under Bondi’s leadership. He has pointed to the department’s failure to secure convictions against figures like former FBI Director James B. Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James as evidence of her ineffectiveness. In a September social media post, Trump publicly aired his grievances over the absence of indictments against his foes.

A potential replacement, Lee Zeldin, has been floated as a candidate to succeed Bondi. Zeldin, a former Republican congressman from New York and a staunch Trump ally, has earned praise for his work at the EPA, where he has prioritized Trump’s “energy dominance” agenda. “He’s our secret weapon,” Trump said of Zeldin at a February White House event promoting the coal industry, noting his record-setting pace in securing approvals.

Despite the tensions, Trump has sent mixed signals about Bondi’s future. Publicly, he has lauded her loyalty and maintained frequent communication with her, while a recent statement described her as “a wonderful person” doing “a good job.” Privately, however, his complaints have intensified, contrasting with images of the two traveling together to the Supreme Court on Wednesday.

The House Oversight Committee has added pressure by voting last month to subpoena Bondi for testimony on the Justice Department’s Epstein investigation. Her deposition is set for April 14, though efforts are underway with Representative James R. Comer of Kentucky to potentially avoid it.

Trump’s hesitation to fire cabinet members, a lesson from the chaos of his first term, appears to be waning. The smooth removal of Kristi Noem as Homeland Security Secretary and the subsequent confirmation of Markwayne Mullin have emboldened him to consider more decisive action. If Bondi is ousted, Zeldin’s elevation could signal a sharper focus on aligning the Justice Department with Trump’s political priorities.

The potential firing of Bondi comes as the Justice Department faces scrutiny over its handling of high-profile cases. With the Epstein deposition looming on April 14, the outcome could further shape Trump’s decision on her future.
