YouTube Could Inherit 30% of TikTok Creators Amid Ban Threat

As TikTok faces a potential US shutdown, new data suggests Google‘s (Nasdaq: GOOGL) YouTube is positioned to become the primary destination for displaced content creators, with 30% of current TikTok creators identifying it as their preferred alternative platform.

The March 2024 survey by CivicScience reveals YouTube leads a fragmented field of potential successors, with Meta‘s (Nasdaq: META) platforms Facebook and Instagram capturing 29% and 15% of creator preference respectively.

The findings come at a critical moment for TikTok, as ByteDance seeks an emergency pause on a law requiring the company to sell the platform by January 19, 2025, or face a US ban. The stakes are substantial, with TikTok reporting over 170 million monthly US users.

ByteDance’s legal challenge, filed Monday with the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, argues for time to allow Supreme Court deliberation and potential input from the incoming Trump administration. Trump’s national security adviser has indicated the president-elect “wants to save TikTok” while addressing American data security concerns.

If ByteDance fails to secure an extension or complete a divestiture, YouTube’s established video-sharing infrastructure and significant US market presence could help it absorb the largest share of TikTok’s displaced creator community.
