1.21 Gigawatts!?! The DeLorean EV Has Arrived

Almost two months after teasing an all-electric incarnation of the ‘80s DeLorean DMC-12 that was featured in Back to the Future, the DeLorean Motor Company has finally given a first look into the Alpha 5 electric vehicle (EV).

The DeLorean EV honors the iconic look of the original — is it even a DeLorean without the gullwing doors? The Alpha 5’s look was designed by ItalDesign, a company owned by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the designer who conceptualized the shape of the original DMC-12.

The Alpha 5 leaves the angular wedge shape in the past but keeps the aforementioned doors and the sloped design. They’ve also added two more seats in the back. According to the site, the base model will come with a 100kWh battery, capable of an esitmated range of 300 miles and a top speed of 155mph.

And in case you’re wondering, this future version of the DeLorean Motor Company is not the same automaker that built the DMC-12, as that original company closed in 1982. The rights to the DeLorean brand was acquired by a Texas-based company that supplies replacement parts for original DMC-12s. The DMC-12 is the only car that the original DeLorean company produced.

The website reveal of the new DeLorean will be followed by a real-life formal showing on August 18 at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance car show.
