An outage that could keep production halted for as long as 21 days has forced Algoma Steel Group (TSX: ASTL) to suspend its electric arc furnace after on-site power generation was knocked out.
At the root of the shutdown is the Lake Superior Power generating facility. One of the LSP turbine units flagged an abnormal condition and was automatically pulled offline, while the remaining LSP units kept running. With that plant supplying electricity to Algoma’s steelmaking operations, the furnace had to go dark.
Repair planning is already underway. The company’s technical teams and outside specialists are on site examining the affected equipment and weighing the options in front of them. Algoma is also taking advantage of the shutdown to advance previously scheduled LSP and other operating maintenance, saying the combined work will cut total downtime over the year and leave it stronger on restart.
Customer orders should hold up in the near term. Downstream finishing and shipping activities continue, and based on current inventory and order positions, Algoma does not expect a significant impact on its ability to meet committed customer delivery dates. It did warn that future shipment volumes may be affected.
The 21-day figure reflects the time needed to commission a contracted spare turbine and restore normal operating conditions at LSP. To do that, Algoma is working with GE Vernova under a long-term contracted service agreement built for this kind of situation, mobilizing and commissioning that spare turbine.
A quicker fix is also on the table. Algoma is pursuing an alternative onsite power supply arrangement with the Independent Electricity System Operator that, if approved, could restart the furnace within roughly 10 days. The company said it will provide a further update once a restart timeline is set.
