Armenia To Exit Post-Soviet CSTO, Timing Yet Undetermined

Armenia has confirmed that it will be exiting the Collective Security Treaty Organization, or the CSTO, an alliance originally formed by Russia in response to NATO that consists of post-Soviet states.

The decision was made public by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, as reported by TASS. Pashinyan revealed the plan in response to a member of opposition in parliament challenging the country to leave the union.

“We will leave, are you scaring me with this? Everything is fine with us, we will decide when we leave. What do you think is the next step, can we go back? Don’t worry,” Pashinyan is said to have responded.

The announcement by Pashinyan follows shortly after the withdrawal of Russian peacekeepers from Nagorno-Karabakh, a region who’s ownership is contested by Armenia and Azerbaijan, was confirmed by Azerbaijan.

Timing of Armenia’s exit has yet to be determined.
