Further leadership changes are taking place at Barrick Mining (TSX: ABX), whom this morning announced the resignation of their lead independent director. Ben van Beurden has stepped down from the company, with no reason provided for the departure.
The departure is rather odd, given the fact that van Beurden, former CEO of Shell, joined the board in May 2025, and was appointed lead independent director in August, bringing his time with the company to just seven months. His appointment to the lead role was surrounded with commentary on his history of transforming Shell from an oil-focused operation to a diversified energy leader, and his experience in streamlining the structure of the company.
Moving forward Loreto Silva, a current non-executive member of the board and the former Minister of Public Works for Chile, has been named lead independent director on a go-forward basis. Silva was initially appointed to Barrick’s board in August 2019.

“The Barrick Board remains focused on delivering long-term value for shareholders. The Company has industry-leading assets and a strengthened leadership team that is fully aligned on delivering our strategic priorities,” commented John Thornton, Chairman of Barrick.
The departure of van Beurden notably follows the ousting of long-time Barrick CEO Mark Bristow in September.
Barrick Mining last traded at $55.18 on the TSX.
