Canadian Government Spends Close to A Million to Cull 84 Deer

Today in This Is Why People Want To Kick Out Justin Trudeau And His Liberals, Parks Canada spent a whopping $834,000 to hire contractors from abroad to use a helicopter to cull a total of 84 deer on Sidney Island.

The culling, which targets the invasive European fallow deer with an estimated population of a few hundred, is part of a $6-million multi-year effort to restore the Coast Douglas-fir forest ecosystem in the area. The first phase, conducted from December 1-11, involved marksmen using a combination of nighttime ground-based hunting and daytime aerial operations from a helicopter.

Parks Canada stated that three certified marksmen from the US and New Zealand were employed for the first phase, costing approximately $834,000 – which many argued was unnecessary and unnecessarily expensive considering organized hunts have helped reduce the deer population on the island.

Despite public opposition that saw protests, residents approved the project with a 52% vote. According to Parks Canada, the operation yielded approximately 800 kilograms (1,800 pounds) of recovered meat, hides, and usable materials distributed within local W̱SÁNEĆ communities. A second phase of ground hunting is scheduled for the fall of 2024 to spring 2025.
