Carbon Tax: Canada’s CO2 Savings Equate To Just HOURS Of China’s Emissions

Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions have decreased since the implementation of the federal carbon tax in April 2019. Still, data suggests the policy’s global impact may be relatively small when compared to emissions trends of larger nations.

Official data shows Canadian emissions fell from approximately 745 megatonnes (Mt) of CO2 equivalent in 2019 to around 680 Mt by 2023 — a reduction of roughly 65 Mt over four years.

Meanwhile, International Energy Agency data reveals China’s CO2 emissions from fuel combustion alone increased from 9,915.5 Mt in 2019 to 10,613.2 Mt in 2022, a rise of 697.6 Mt over three years.

Calculations using IEA data indicate Canada’s total emissions reduction since implementing the carbon tax would be offset by approximately 54 hours of China’s emissions at current rates. So, has it all been worth it?

The federal government, in the midst of a federal election, is now changing its approach. A Department of Finance Canada document confirms the government “has made regulations that cease the application of the federal fuel charge, effective April 1, 2025,” while simultaneously strengthening industrial carbon pricing.

“A price on pollution for large emitters will continue to be a pillar of Canada’s plan to build a strong economy and greener future,” the government said in its announcement.

It is totally frustrating! How do we even dent this situation? I just have to wonder if it is right that we the rest of the world just throws up our hands and does nothing. Do we just all give up because China is spewing fully %40 of the carbon emissions into the atmosphere? If the rest of us do nothing then we finish us off with the other %60. It err on still doing the right thing and finding it unfair and frustrating and modelling the right behaviour. China will choke themselves out and be forced to find a cleaner solution eventually….one hopes. I hear your frustration loud and clear!!!

  2. Well there we go. Canada spends o. a fight we will NEVERwin unless the likes of China and India cut their carbon foot print. So Canadians need to vote on these appalling costs and figures. Will Mr Carney and his liberals continue to waste Canadians money for 38 hrs of carbon reduction in China??
Mr Carney will you continue with this loosing battle? I am tired of this high tax when there is no control of over other offenders.
