Defense Secretary Hegseth Fires Army Chief Randy George in Leadership Shake-Up

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth dismissed Gen. Randy George, the Army’s chief of staff, on April 2, 2026, marking a dramatic escalation in tensions between the Pentagon’s civilian leadership and the Army’s top brass. The firing, confirmed during a 4 p.m. phone call from Hegseth to George, also saw the removal of Gen. David M. Hodne, head of the Army’s Transformation and Training Command, and Maj. Gen. William Green Jr., the Army’s top chaplain.

The move has sparked outrage among senior Army officers, who described George’s dismissal as a severe blow to a service already reeling from recent leadership purges. Over the past months, several experienced three- and four-star generals, many with combat backgrounds in Iraq and Afghanistan, have been sidelined or forced out. Notably, Gen. James J. Mingus, the Army’s vice chief of staff, was pushed into early retirement in October 2025, a decision made with minimal input from Army leadership.

At the heart of the conflict are long-standing grievances between Hegseth and Army leaders, including Army Secretary Daniel P. Driscoll, with whom George had forged a close partnership. Military officials pointed to disputes over personnel decisions, particularly Hegseth’s controversial move to block the promotion of four Army officers to one-star general. Two of these officers are Black, and two are women, raising questions among some officials about potential bias in their exclusion from a list dominated by white male candidates. Despite pressure from Hegseth, both George and Driscoll stood by the officers’ exemplary records, refusing to comply with the defense secretary’s demands.

A pivotal moment came two weeks before the firing when George requested a meeting with Hegseth to address the promotions and broader concerns over interference in Army personnel matters. Hegseth declined to meet, signaling an irreparable rift.

George, appointed in 2023, had been a transformative figure during his tenure, steering the Army through a historic recruiting crisis in 2024 and championing modernization efforts. His “transformation in contact” program deployed 3,000-soldier brigades to test cutting-edge drones, AI-powered targeting systems, and new tactics. To fund these innovations, he axed projects like the M-10 Booker light tank, on which the Army had spent over $1 billion, deeming it vulnerable to cheap kamikaze drones costing as little as $500.

Among his priorities was accelerating the development of the M1E3 Abrams, a lighter and faster iteration of the Army’s main battle tank. He also backed the Infantry Squad Vehicle, a nimble, unarmored troop carrier designed to evade attacks through speed and off-road capability rather than traditional protection.

Gen. Christopher LaNeve, previously Hegseth’s senior military assistant at the Pentagon, is expected to replace George as chief of staff. The transition comes at a critical juncture for the Army, which faces ongoing challenges in adapting to modern warfare demands while grappling with internal discord over leadership and direction.

Hegseth’s decisions have drawn scrutiny beyond military circles, with social media posts from far-right figure Laura Loomer, known to be close to Hegseth and President Trump, foreshadowing George’s removal. The dismissals cap a turbulent period for the Army, which recorded a loss of over 20 senior leadership positions through firings or forced retirements since mid-2025.
