EdgeWater Wireless To License Technology to Chip Makers

This morning, Edgewater Wireless Systems Inc (TSXV: YFI) announced the launch of a licensing program including access to what could be game changing IP for Wireless Internet and specifically IoT related device manufacturers.

A Recap On The Technology

Edgewater Wireless has patented technology that allows for inband wireless slicing to deliver faster and smoother internet for demanding applications like video, gaming, and voice applications. This is a big idea. It solves the problem of wifi density. Global opportunity and licensing of IP to large chip giants such as Qualcomm, Broadcom, Intel, etc and chip manufactures could deliver massive scale. The Edgewater IP turns Wifi into a “multi-lane highway” as opposed to the current “single lane highway” creating organized paths to navigate high density traffic.

The Addressable Market

According to the Global Wireless Congress, there are currently over 8 billion wifi devices in use with over 3.5 billion new devices added in the last 12 months. It is expected that by 2021 there will be 3.5 wifi devices and connections per capita. Wireless data traffic requirements are projected to grow at 47% annually for the next five years.

Edgewater’s patented technology will enable silicon manufacturers to implement Wi-Fi Spectrum Slicing on their platforms, dramatically reducing time to market for the next phase of residential Wi-Fi innovation — high-density capacity management. It will improve the ever densifying home market by licensing Wi-Fi Spectrum Slicing to established chip vendors with massive residential market share.

“With the emergence of applications like CableLabs’ Dual Channel Wi-Fi™ standard and the enormous growth in Wi-Fi enabled devices, demand for Edgewater’s Wi-Fi Spectrum Slicing technology has been growing….. Licensing our valuable IP and expertise provides a scalable platform for growth and maximizes shareholder returns with a high-margin line of business which adds to our other high growth lines of business in both the OEM and Solutions markets.”

Andrew Skafel, President and CEO of Edgewater Wireless

The idea here is that the multi-year investments required for silicon-based innovation will be significantly reduced by leveraging Edgewater’s IP.
