In the unlikeliest of feuds, Elon Musk escalated the fallout from a combative media interview by directing a personal insult at chef and humanitarian José Andrés, extending a dispute over journalistic scrutiny into a confrontation involving one of the world’s most prominent disaster-relief figures.
Musk replied, “You’re an asshole,” to a post in which Andrés defended Zanny Minton Beddoes, editor-in-chief of The Economist, and accused Musk of behaving like a tyrant.
The sequence began after Musk’s July 23 interview with Minton Beddoes, his first extended interview following SpaceX’s public listing. The discussion covered artificial intelligence, his political involvement, European politics, and his previous work with the US government’s Department of Government Efficiency.

During the interview, Minton Beddoes challenged Musk over his attempts to influence European politics, including his backing of Germany’s Alternative for Germany party and his warnings that Britain could face civil war.
“Why should you be able to shape European politics? You don’t even live there?” she asked, as reported by New York Post. Musk responded by pointing to his roughly quarter-billion X followers and arguing that journalists were less popular than he was.
Minton Beddoes later said it was irresponsible for someone with Musk’s reach to distribute claims that were untrue. Musk subsequently described her on X as a “traitor to the West, plain and simple.”
Andrés entered the dispute by telling Musk to “drink a glass of water before you tweet.” He acknowledged Musk’s work building cars, satellites, and rockets, but rejected the attack on a journalist for asking difficult questions.

“You sound and act like a tyrant….change!” Andrés wrote. Musk’s three-word response followed: “You’re an asshole.”
The confrontation carries weight beyond an exchange between two well-known figures because Musk’s personal account functions simultaneously as the public voice of an executive, the largest account on the platform he controls, and a distribution system capable of moving political and corporate narratives without an intermediary.
Musk remains Tesla’s chief executive and oversees product design, engineering, and manufacturing, according to the company. He also leads SpaceX and operates X, giving statements made from his personal account immediate relevance across several major businesses.
Andrés, meanwhile, founded World Central Kitchen in 2010 after responding to the Haiti earthquake. The organization says it has served more than 600 million meals, including over 130 million during crisis responses in 2025.
The episode also followed Musk’s acknowledgment during the Economist interview that he had become overly involved in politics.
“I think I got a little too involved in politics, got carried away, frankly,” he said.
His subsequent posts showed that stepping back from formal government work has not meant separating political argument, media criticism, and corporate-facing communications.
