Freeland, Ford Allegedly Don’t Want Disgraced Toronto Mayor John Tory to Resign

John Tory, the disgraced mayor of Toronto who last week abruptly announced he’s abdicating his position after news broke that he had a months-long affair with a 31 year-old former staffer, is now supposedly being urged to remain in office by none other than deputy prime minister Chrystia Freeland, Ontario premier Doug Ford, and the Toronto police union.

Tory, who was serving his third term as the city’s mayor (we are using the past tense lightly here as there’s speculation whether Tory is actually following through with his supposed resignation), late last Friday said he’s stepping away from his mayoral duties to focus on his marriage to wife of nearly 45 years Barbara Hackett, after admitting he had an affair with a former employee nearly 38 years his junior.

The news broke at an interesting time for the city of Toronto and Tory himself, who not only participated with the World Economic Forum but is also receiving a hefty $100,000 per year from Rogers for serving as an advisor for Rogers Communications (talk about some cozy connections!). With a budget meeting at city council slated to take place on Wednesday, York Centre–Downsview councillor James Pasternak confirmed the mayor with retain his current role for the deliberations, but it remains unknown if he will resign on Wednesday or until after the budget is passed.

However, according to a source close to Tory cited by none other than Rogers-owned CityNews, Canada’s deputy prime minister and fellow World Economic Forum member Chrystia Freeland— along with Ontario premier Doug Ford, Toronto’s police union, and even some City Hall Councillors are all supposedly urging Tory to reconsider his planned resignation. Sounds absurd, doesn’t it? Perhaps sleeping with subordinates while serving as city mayor isn’t a big deal after all— but we will wait for Freeland herself to give a take on the matter in the morning.
