Germany Edges Closer to 50% Renewable Energy Milestone Amid Solar Slowdown

Since the start of 2023, Germany has successfully connected 8.99 GW of new solar capacity to the grid. Bavaria, a federal state, played a significant role in this achievement, contributing 2.23 GW to the total. As of the end of August, the cumulative solar capacity in operation across Germany reached an impressive 76.48 GW.

Germany’s expansion of solar energy experienced a slight slowdown in August, as reported by the Federal Network Agency. Newly installed solar capacity for the month reached a modest 1,056 MW, marking the lowest level since February.

Of the new solar capacity added in August, only 126.1 MW operated without subsidies. The majority of fresh subsidized capacity, around 700.8 MW, came from rooftop solar installations, while ground-mounted solar parks accounted for 228 MW.

But, Germany’s commitment to renewable energy is on track to achieve significant milestones. Economy Minister Robert Habeck earlier stated that the country is likely to generate more than 50% of its power from renewable sources this year. However, he emphasized the need to accelerate the transition, aiming for 80% of power generation from renewables by 2030.

Minister Habeck also highlighted the booming solar power industry, with Germany expected to achieve its 9-gigawatt capacity target for this year.

Germany now also produces about 1 million solar panels per quarter.
