Insurers Scrub Executive Photos After UnitedHealthcare CEO Killing

Major U.S. health insurance companies are intensifying security measures for top executives after UnitedHealthcare (NYSE: UNH) CEO Brian Thompson was fatally shot outside a Manhattan hotel on Wednesday before the company’s annual investor conference, with insurers taking immediate steps to reduce executive visibility.

UnitedHealth Group removed executive leadership photos from its website Wednesday, followed by CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) on Thursday.

Thompson was killed in what police described as a targeted attack before entering the Hilton hotel. The gunman, captured on surveillance footage, remains at large, according to the New York City Police Department, which reports no known motive.

“These companies are hearing what experts like me have been saying about how easy it is to identify and then find their executives,” Robert D’Amico, founder of Sierra One Consulting and former FBI personnel, told Reuters.

Thompson’s wife told NBC News he had received job-related threats concerning “coverage,” though specifics remain unclear. UnitedHealthcare representatives declined to comment on the alleged threats.
