Israel Declares War After Hamas Launches A Major Attack
In what has been referred to as a “huge military and intelligence failure by Israel,” the country last night was subjected to a massive, large scale attack by Hamas forces on the 50th anniversary of the 1973 Yom Kippur war.
Not even an hour later, Israel’s defence force declared a state of war as it worked to address the matter.
The operation began with the launch of over 5,000 rockets into Israel, striking targets as far as Tel Aviv itself from the territory of Palestine, while also targeting Jerusalem. At the same time, Hamas called upon other militant groups in the region to join in on the attacks against Israel.
Images of the destruction caused by the sudden attack meanwhile have been shared across social media, with reports of Hamas capturing large amounts of military equipment in the early hours of battle.
Israeli Prime Minister Benhamin Netanyahu has indicated the first objective for the country is to clear out hostile forces that infiltrated the country and restore security, which is to be followed by the military “exacting an immense price from the enemy, within the Gaza Strip as well.”
Thirdly, Netanyahu indicated that they will reinforce other fronts, “so that nobody should mistakenly join this war.”
Despite the third objective, support for Hamas and other militant groups has been rolling in from several nations that tend to be anti-West.
As of the most recent reports, Hamas is said to continue to control Israeli settlements along the border with Gaza, while 198 Palestinians have been killed in ongoing air strikes conducted by Israeli.
The events continue to unfold.
