Ontario Stakes $31M to Defend Legal Cannabis Revenue Stream

The battle against unauthorized cannabis sales in Ontario is receiving a big boost, with provincial authorities announcing a new $31 million enforcement campaign. The three-year initiative, revealed in the latest economic forecast, will strengthen the specialized cannabis enforcement unit led by the Ontario Provincial Police.

Law enforcement officials are particularly concerned about the surge in illegal dispensaries and online vendors operating outside the regulated framework. Recent estimates suggest an alarming trend, with illicit operators popping up across major urban centers, especially in Toronto where nearly 100 unauthorized shops have emerged within the last year.

Toronto’s city council has spearheaded the push for regulatory reform, demanding provincial authorities strengthen the Cannabis Control Act. Their recent motion calls for expanded municipal enforcement powers and harsher penalties to combat illegal operations more effectively.

Licensed retailers, who face strict regulatory oversight and substantial operating costs, have long advocated for more aggressive action against their illegal competitors.
