Queen Elizabeth II Dies at Age 96

After being put under medical supervision earlier this week, the Queen passed away Thursday afternoon at Balmoral Castle in Scotland aged 96.

“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow,” Buckingham Palace announced. Her eldest son, Prince Charles, along with his wife Camilla, have automatically become the head of state for the monarchy’s 14 Commonwealth realms.

The Queen marked an unprecedented 70 years as Britain’s head of state earlier this year; a tenure that spanned 15 prime ministers starting with Winston Churchill, and witness to countless domestic and global events starting with post Second World War austerity. Since taking the throne in 1952 at age 25, she endured profound moments in her family life, including her father’s death, divorces of three of her four children, the death of Princess Diana, as well as the passing of her husband Prince Philip in 2021.

Plans have long been in place in any unfortunate eventuality, including the death of the Monarch. Previously leaked details of Operation London Bridge, often referred to as Operation Unicorn, outline plans for moving Queen Elizabeth’s coffin from Balmoral to temporarily rest at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, within two days of her passing.
