Republicans Secure House, Completing GOP Trifecta in Washington

The Republican Party is set to maintain control of the House of Representatives, securing their 218th seat required for a majority, according to Decision Desk HQ projections. This victory grants the GOP unified control over Washington, as President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office in January.

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-La.), a relatively new figure in national politics, stands to gain a significant boost in influence, both legislatively and within the party’s campaign operations.

Republicans successfully defended several key seats, preserving incumbents like Reps. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) and David Valadao (R-Calif.). Additionally, the GOP made gains by unseating Democratic incumbents, including Rep. Susan Wild (D-Pa.) by State Rep. Ryan Mackenzie and Rep. Matt Cartwright (D-Pa.) by businessman Rob Bresnahan.

However, the party also faced losses, with three New York freshmen—Reps. Anthony D’Esposito, Marc Molinaro, and Brandon Williams—along with Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer (R-Ore.), failing to secure reelection. Although the final distribution of seats remains uncertain as California votes are still counted, Republicans are anticipated to hold a narrow majority in the next Congress.
