Rumble CEO Leaves Europe Following Telegram Founder’s Arrest

Chris Pavlovski, the founder and CEO of video-sharing platform Rumble, Inc. (NYSE: RUM), announced that he has left Europe on Sunday, August 25, citing concerns over the recent arrest of Telegram CEO Pavel Durov in France.

Pavlovski, a Canadian national, claimed on social media that France had “threatened Rumble” and “crossed a red line” with Durov’s arrest.

Rumble, a YouTube alternative based in Florida and Ontario, has gained popularity among far-right users due to its less stringent content moderation policies. The platform has previously clashed with European authorities, blocking access to French users in November 2022 after refusing to remove certain Russian news sources as requested by the French government.

Pavel Durov, a Russian-born French citizen and founder of the encrypted messaging app Telegram, was arrested on August 24 at Paris–Le Bourget Airport. The arrest was based on a warrant issued by France’s judicial police as part of a preliminary investigation.

Reports suggest that the investigation focuses on Telegram’s alleged lack of cooperation with law enforcement and insufficient moderation of criminal activities on its platform, including child sexual abuse, drug trafficking, fraud, and terrorism.

Responding to the allegations, Telegram said on X that it complies with European Union laws and that its moderation practices are “within industry standards and constantly improving.” The company added that it would be “absurd” to hold a platform or its owner responsible for user abuse.

Pavlovski expressed hope for Durov’s immediate release and mentioned ongoing legal battles with French authorities. French officials are expected to release a public statement regarding Durov’s arrest on Monday, August 26.

As of this writing, Rumble has not provided additional comments on the situation, and Pavlovski’s current location remains undisclosed.
